Intel Purchases Zarlink's TV Tuner Business
October 14, 2005
Intel has announced the acquisition of Zarlink's British radio frequency consumer business, which makes demodulation and tuner technologies, for about US$70 million in cash. The deal is forecast to close in late November. Intel intends to use the technologies, which convert analog signals into digital signals, to provide system-on-a-chip solutions to consumer device makers. In the digital TV segment, the acquired assets are expected to complement those that Intel acquired from Israeli firm Oplus in early 2005, and may be applied to Intel's Viiv branding effort in the home entertainment PC segment.
