Following a report by MIC's Asia Express on January 18, SK Hynix has unveiled plans to invest more than 120 trillion Korean won (approximately US$91.4 billion; US$1=1,313 won) into a state-of-the-art chip complex located within the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, by the year 2046, as reported by the Korea Economic Daily on March 21. The company has completed 35% of the construction of the first unit, with full completion expected by March 2025.
In March of 2023, the Korean government designated Yongin as one of the potential sites for a new national industrial complex, alongside Pyeongtaek, Hwaseong, Icheon, Anseong, Seongnam, Pangyo, and Suwon in Gyeonggi Province, with the aim of establishing a semiconductor mega-cluster. The new mega-cluster is slated to become the world's largest semiconductor facility, projected to produce 7.7 million wafers per month by 2030. Currently, the cluster comprises 19 semiconductor fabs and two research fabs, with plans to expand to 32 and five, respectively, by 2047.
Apart from Korea, Taiwan plays a pivotal role in the semiconductor industry. According to the Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute (MIC), a division of the Institute for Information Industry (III), projections indicate that the Taiwanese semiconductor industry's shipment value is set to reach approximately NT$4.17 trillion (US$135.3 billion; US$1 = NT$30.8) in 2024, reflecting a robust year-on-year increase of 13.6%.
