Japan, Australia, US to Expand Undersea Cable Connection for US$95M
June 09, 2023

According to AP (Associated Press) News dated June 7, Japan has recently announced its collaboration with the United States and Australia to construct an undersea cable, costing US$95 million, aimed at countering China's influence. The cable, spanning a total length of 2,250 kilometers, will connect East Micronesia nations to the existing cable landing point located in Pohnpei, Micronesia, in the Indo-Pacific region. NEC has been assigned the task of expanding the cable network, which is expected to be completed around 2025. With the increasing demand for 5G technology, the cable network will provide high-speed, high-quality, and secure communication infrastructure for residents, businesses, and governments in the Indo-Pacific region.

According to the Market Intelligence & Consultant Institute (MIC), the shipment volume of 5G FWA CPE in Taiwan is estimated to reach 2.479 million units in the first half of 2023 and 3.061 million units in the second half. This represents a growth of 35.5% and 14.6% compared to the same period last year. The continuous investment from major US telecom operators, along with the involvement of telecom providers in Europe, Asia-Pacific, and emerging markets, will contribute to the commercial expansion of 5G CPE. Although the growth rate may be slower than that of 2022, overall shipment performance is expected to show positive growth. Established in 1987, MIC is a division of III (Institute for Information Industry), a major government think tank and one of the leading IT research institutes in Taiwan.
