Taiwan-based DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) maker Nanya Technology recently announced that it will build a new 12-inch plant for NT$300 billion (US$10.8 billion; US$1 =NT$27.7), with an aim to produce wafers using 10nm process and EUV process, the Commercial Daily reported on April 20. This new plant, to be located at New Taipei City, is scheduled to kick off construction by the end of 2021 and complete by 2023. Upon completion, the plant is anticipated to initially churn out 15,000 wafers and gradually to 45,000 wafers per month. The construction will be carried out in three phases over the next 7 years. Taiwan DRAM industry’s shipment value grew from US$2.8 billion in 2019 to US$3.2 billion in 2020, up 14.3% year-on-year, according to MIC (Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute), a major government think tank and leading IT research institute in Taiwan. MIC states the industry’s quarterly shipment value is anticipated to have reached US$866.6 million in the first quarter of 2021 and rise to a new high of US$902.6 million in the second quarter since 2019.
