India Boasts to Outpace China as World’s Largest Smartphone Manufacturing Country
December 23, 2020

Despite the recent violence at a Wistron factory in Southern India, India boasts to surpass China to become the world’s largest smartphone manufacturing country and one of the major IT hubs, Commercial Times reported on December 15. The Modi government has been promoting foreign investment in the manufacturing industry, especially electronics manufacturing. With only two phone makers in 2014, India now has up to 260 phone makers, making the country the world’s second largest phone manufacturing countries, only next to China.  In 2020, India has launched an initiative called PLI (Production Linked Incentive), which is a reward-based program by rewarding 4% to 6% for qualified applicants who will achieve year-on-year growth in the next five years. Qualified applicants are those who sell products with an average selling price of over US$200 and production capacity reaching a certain scale.
