Australia to Increase the Use of Facial Recognition at Airports
December 31, 2019

Australia’s Department of Home Affairs recently announced that it has urged the government to increase the adoption of facial recognition technology at SmartGates in Australian airports, the Xinhua News reported on December 27. In addition to collecting face data, Australia has a department which manages all of Australia’s major intelligence agencies and photos and fingerprint data of people from 46 countries who have applied an Australia visa. These biometric data will then be cross-checked with data of intelligence agencies from Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The number of visa application to live, work, and sightsee in Australia is expected to rise from 10 million in 2018-2019 to 13 million in 2026, thereby exerting pressure on the immigration system. By expanding the use of face data checks, the Australian government aims to increase its power over border controls while allowing people to enter and exit Australia more seamlessly and efficiently.
