Sharp to Plow US$294 Million into Smaller LCD Panel Production
June 16, 2014

Sharp intends to spend around 30 billion yen (US$293.7 million; US$1=102.145 yen) on the expansion of production capacity for small and medium-size LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) panels in two of its Mie Prefecture plants during the current fiscal year (from April 2014 to March 2015), reported Nikkei on June 13. After the upgrade plan is completed, the Kameyama No.2 plant will be equipped with new equipment that helps to produce IGZO (indium-gallium-zinc oxide) panels at lower cost while the Kameyama No.3 plant will manufacture panels with high pixel density. The company expects its operating profit for this fiscal year to reach around 100 billion yen (US$979 million), with 55 billion yen (US$538 million) coming from the LCD business.
