Toshiba Mobile Display to Enter LCD Venture in Guangdong, China
August 14, 2009
Japan's TMD (Toshiba Mobile Display) revealed on
August 5 that it will enter a joint venture in China to produce small-sized LCD
(Liquid Crystal Display) panels for use in mobile phones, Nikkei reported. It
is expected that TMD's stake in the China venture will not exceed 20%, while
Chinese LCD maker Greentech Group will take approximately 60% stake and a Hong
Kong investment fund will own the remaining stake. Located in Heyuan, Guangdong
Province, the venture is planned to be launched by the end of August 2009 at
the earliest, and TMD is expected to transfer unused equipment from its Toyama amorphous
silicon LCD line, which was shut down in March this year, to the new China facility.
Commencement of production is slated for the first half of 2010.
