Sony and NEC's DVD drive joint venture, Sony NEC Optiarc, will be officially established on April 3, with a combined capital of 490 million yen, in which Sony will hold a 55% share and NEC for 45%. Both companies will transfer their DVD drive businesses, including development and sales, to the new company. It will then become the world's second largest DVD drive maker, with a global market share of 20%.
