Taiwan and EU Forge Ahead in 6G Cooperation
October 09, 2024

Taiwan's first overseas 6G experimental network certified by the European Union (EU) has attracted major Taiwanese players like Compal, Lite-On, and BenQ Materials to seize 6G opportunities by investing in 6G R&D. Taiwan recently announced that its technical team has been certified under the EU's largest 6G experimental network, the SANDBOX program. This milestone marks Taiwan as the first overseas location to host a certified 6G experimental network.

The global 6G market is anticipated to reach US$340.5 billion by 2040. For this reason, Taiwan's commercialization of 6G is slated for 2030, while Taiwan's 6G telecom equipment is expected to debut as early as 2028. To secure a voice in the development of 6G standards and core technologies, Taiwanese leaders like ITRI, TSMC, MediaTek, Chunghwa Telecom, Delta, Pegatron, Foxconn, and Wistron have joined international organizations such as the Next G Alliance (NGA) and the EU's 6G IA.
Taiwan's strength in manufacturing base stations, Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS), chips, sensors, and O-RAN solutions makes it well-positioned in the 6G era.

Taipei-based Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute (MIC) stated that 6G represents not only a technological leap but also a value-driven transformation across three key areas: society, environment, and economy. According to MIC, 6G should enhance public services, promote digital transformation, reduce infrastructure costs, and foster new business models, all while prioritizing green design to achieve sustainable development in the future.
