Abstract

The report finds that the demand for fabless ICs was in high gear in the third quarter of 2020. Thus, shipment value of the Taiwanese fabless IC industry in the third quarter of 2020 registered over 30% sequential and nearly 40% year-on-year growth, arriving at US$7.4 billion. The growth was mainly attributed to Huawei ban, which was announced on May 15 and took effective on September 15. Prior to that, not only Huawei, other Chinese smartphone brands such as Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo also placed more orders with an aim to claim the market share lost by Huawei. Therefore, with strong pull-in demand from Chinese smartphone brands, the demand for application processors, driver ICs, PMIC (Power Management IC), and power ICs also soared in the third quarter of 2020. Hence, shipment value of the fabless IC industry is anticipated to have reached US$25.3 billion in 2020, registering 27.6% growth compared to 2019.
