Greater Chinese Netbook PC Industry Shipment Expected to Grow 27.2% QoQ in 3Q 2009, Says MIC
July 29, 2009

According to research of the Taipei-based Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute (MIC) conducted as part of the ITIS project, shipment volume of the Greater Chinese netbook PC industry (shipment statistics based on shipments of Taiwanese netbook PC ODM companies) is forecast to reach approximately 21.10 million units in the full-year 2009. The industry's shipment volume in the first half of 2009 was approximately 10.04 million units, and shipment volume in the second half of the year is forecast to reach approximately 11.13 million units.

As 10" has become the mainstream size of netbook PC products, ASP (Average Selling Price) of the Greater Chinese netbook PC industry rose to US$220 in the second quarter of 2009. Combined with the increase in shipment volume, the Greater Chinese netbook PC industry shipment value in the second quarter of 2009 is estimated at US$1.19 billion, growing 21.4% sequentially.

As for development of the Greater Chinese netbook PC industry in the second half of 2009, brand-name vendors will adjust their product strategies to match up with the CULV (Consumer Ultra Low Voltage) platform. In the second half of 2009, the market share of 11.6" products is expected to increase, which is expected to push down shipments of 10" products. Furthermore, according to MIC Industry Analyst Ya Wei Ku, "the impact of the Google Android platform and Chrome OS on Microsoft is expected to be limited in the near-term future. However, Android and Chrome could possibly pose a threat to companies currently working with Linux OS. In the future, Google could possibly become the dominant force in the Linux OS market, and thereby also increase the market share of Linux systems.

Greater Chinese netbook PC industry shipment volume grew in the second quarter of 2009. The reason behind this growth was the mass shipment of new 10" netbook PC models of Acer and Dell in the second quarter. 10" became the mainstream size in the market. Furthermore, several branded vendors benefited from cooperation with mobile operators for bundled sales packages consisting of telecom services and netbook PCs. Greater Chinese netbook PC industry shipment volume in the second quarter of 2009 is estimated at 5.43 million units, growing 17.6% sequentially and 345.7% year-on-year.

In the third quarter of 2009, Japanese netbook PC vendors are also expected to focus on 10" products, while back-to-school demand in this period is expected to stimulate shipments. Greater Chinese netbook PC industry shipment volume is expected to reach 5.87 million units in the third quarter of 2009, growing 27.2% sequentially.
