Japan's Kurary Develops Single-Sheet LCD Backlight Technology
April 20, 2007
Japanese chemical synthetic fiber maker Kuraray has developed a single light dispersion sheet that serves to both collect and disperse the light, thus reducing the thickness of LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) backlight modules to 0.6mm, 40% less than conventional models. Instead of the usual set of four sheets used in LCD backlights, Kurary's single sheet can reflect the light coming from both sides of the light guide plate by means of an array of semicircular microlenses. Kurary's new technology is expected to help reduce the weight and price of LCDs, thus facilitating the design of slimmer mobile phones.
