ASML Opens New Branch in Nanjing, China
August 24, 2017

The Netherland-based ASML recently launched its new branch in Nanjing, with an aim to serve its major client TSMC better in China, Nanjing Daily reported on August 18. Starting in September 2017, ASML will provide lithography systems and services to TSMC's new 12" fab in Nanjing, which is slated to mass produce chips using 16nm process technology in 2018. Other than TSMC, ASML also takes aim at the increasing demand from more than 20 new fabs currently under construction in China. On top of that, ASML's capability to produce EUV (Extreme Ultraviolet) lithography systems will benefit TSMC, making TSMC one of foundries capable of affording EUV lithography and employing the technology for chips using 7nm or more advanced process technology, aside from Samsung, Intel, and GlobalFoundries. Samsung plans to launch first generation 7nm process integrated with EUV lithography technology in 2018, while TSMC and GlobalFoundries in 2019.
