Significant Generational Differences in Social Media Platform Usage, with Facebook as the Key Platform for Users Aged 36 and Above: MIC
November 19, 2024

The Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute (MIC) has released a survey on user behavior regarding Taiwan's social media platforms and messaging apps. Among the top five most-used platforms in Taiwan, Facebook remains the most popular (70%), followed by YouTube (53%), Instagram (34%), PTT (11%), and Dcard (9%). A significant generational gap is evident in social media usage patterns. For users aged 18-25, over 60% use YouTube and Instagram, with Instagram usage notably higher than the overall average. Facebook, the most widely used platform, shows a clear divide at age 35: usage is below 60% for those aged 18-35, while about 75% of users aged 36-65 prefer the platform.

Industry analyst Chiya Hung noted that the top three reasons for using social media have shifted, with "watching entertainment content" now the primary reason, surpassing "keeping in touch with family and friends," while "accessing news and information' has seen an increase from the previous year. Social media platforms have evolved from being a core tool for social communication to a key channel for receiving comprehensive information.
