Three Key Trends for Taiwan's IT Hardware Industry in 2023 - Decentralized Supply Chains, Strengthened High-Value Sectors, and Low-Carbon Transformation: MIC
May 12, 2023

The Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute (MIC) announced the three key issues for Taiwan's IT hardware industry: decentralized supply chains, strengthened high value-added sectors, and low-carbon transformation. Based on MIC's findings, the demand for decentralized production by US customers has led to the trend of PC decentralization.

In addition, Taiwan's information electronics companies are shifting to some high-value sectors such as automotive, where there is potential for growth in ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) aftermarket and EV (Electric Vehicle) charging piles. Furthermore, more than 50% of Taiwan's information electronics industry has not yet initiated carbon emission plans. Therefore, calls for an acceleration in low carbon emissions are expected to drive new business models and opportunities, according to MIC.

Due to weak overall economic performance and sluggish end-user demand, MIC predicts the global notebook PC market will decline by 12% in 2023, to approximately 170 million units. It is expected to return to positive growth in 2024, with a market growth of 11.6%. The global desktop PC market is also expected to decline by 2.8% in 2023, with an estimated 74.65 million units. The overall decline is linked to global trends, but the magnitude of the decline is expected to be slightly higher than the global average, mainly due to the impact of China's return to brand self-production. It is anticipated that laptop and desktop shipments will gradually recover by quarters in the second half of 2023.
