Abstract

Taiwanese ODMs (Original Design Manufacturers) account for more than 80% of notebook computer shipments globally. Further, they have prototype product development and design capabilities. This enables Taiwan to develop a complete in-house semiconductor supply chain, including design, manufacturing and packaging and testing capabilities. These factors have long made Taiwan a vital player in both the global notebook and semiconductor industries. Amid the coronavirus pandemic and related disruptions to the supply chain, Taiwan’s importance as a tech hardware hub is becoming even more pronounced. This report provides the background and overview of the global notebook computer shortage; looks at factors impacting global semiconductor supply and examines the impact of chip shortage on both semiconductor and notebook PC industries.
