Abstract

Applications combining financial services and innovative technology have penetrated into almost all areas of everyday life, with financial scene as the best example. In China, leading tech companies such as Alibaba’s affiliate company Ant Group, Baidu, and Tencent have expanded into the financial service market, providing a variety of services including banking, credit loan, payment, crowdfunding, asset management, and insurance. While these companies have set themselves apart from traditional financial services which rely on traditional financing institutes, the growing complexity of risk contagion and the massive amount of cash flow and information flow stemming from these emerging services have brought significant challenges to supervisory agencies. In the financial supervisory environment featuring strong cross-sector cooperation and huge market demand, China has aggressively promoted SupTech in order to keep the financial market stable and organized. This report analyzes how Chinese companies have developed SupTech and built big data platforms to strengthen macroprudential supervision.
