Abstract

In September 2014, Intel announced that it would purchase a 20% stake in China's UNIS, a state-owned enterprise invested by Tsinghua University, for US$1.5 billion. This year UNIS has acquired Chinese IC brand vendors Spreadtrum and RDA Microelectronics for US$1.7 billion and US$900 million, respectively. Alongside with Intel's investment strategy, it has indeed put a big boost to China's fabless IC industry. This report examines the strategic objectives of Intel's acquisition for UNIS and how this incident will affect China's deployment for the semiconductor industry, especially the fabless IC domain.
