Abstract

In concert with the increasing prevalence of mobile communications, embedded WLAN chip solutions have recently been launched to address the growing demand for smaller chips that consume less power. This aggressive development of embedded WLAN solutions is likely to push a shift away from external network interface cards, integrating data transmission capabilities beyond notebook PCs into smaller mobile devices such as mobile phones. This Radar will discuss the launch of new embedded WLAN solutions and the impact they are likely to have on the mobile phone and WLAN industries.

The launch of new embedded WLAN chips illustrates that the main focus of competition will move away from network interface cards to the embedded market once WLAN technology has reached maturity. In addition the notebook PC and PDA markets, there is also a significant market for mobile phone handsets with built-in WLAN function, which will likely pose a major threat to external WLAN network interface card manufacturers.
