Abstract

As handset makers continued to depress prices of color display handsets and joined operators in subsidizing handsets, replacement demand still ran high in the second quarter of 2004. The Taiwanese mobile phone market defied seasonality to register a sales volume of approximately 1.5 million units. Despite a sequential decline of 6%, this performance represented around 10% growth compared with SARS-affected second quarter of 2003. Market share of color display handsets also broke the 80% level in the second quarter of 2004. Despite the peak retail season in the second half of 2004, sales are likely to be somewhat hindered by handset homogeneity and tepid interest in multimedia services.
