Abstract

In the last few years, the leading Japanese and Korean LCD panel makers have been switching their 3.5G and lower TFT-LCD capacity over to small- and medium-sized panels. While continuing to focus on mainstream applications such as mid-range and high-end handsets and digital cameras, which are characterized by high demand and standardized specifications, they have also been developing new markets that offer high profit margins, but also require higher specs and have significant entry barriers in terms of technology; these include panels for use in cars, aviation, ships, survey equipment and electronic billboards. This report examines recent developments in the leading Japanese and Korean makers' small- and medium-sized panel businesses and their development of new applications, and outlines anticipated future trends in the overall industry.
