Abstract

With global LCD panel supply exceeding demand from the second quarter of 2004 on, LCD TV panel prices underwent rapid declines, driving down LCD TV prices. Consumers played wait-and-see, impacting third quarter sales. As the third quarter closed, driven by more reasonable prices, peak season effects, and aggressive stimulation of the market by makers, LCD TV shipments jumped. Growth was strong in both branded and OEM business, driving up both shipment volume and shipment value for Taiwanese makers. Looking ahead to 2005, lingering peak season effects, new product rollouts, and falling prices should sustain growth in first half of the year. If large-size panel supplies increase, Taiwanese makers may be able to ship more than two million units in 2005.
