Abstract

Despite continuous server shipment growth in 2012, market share of the top three branded vendors, HP, Dell and IBM, has declined slowly. Amid rising investment in large data centers, the server industry once dominated by the three leading brands are to see increasing challenges from new entrants. In the wake of rapid subscriber growth and surging service demand, Google and Facebook have aggressively set up new data centers. Under the considerations of cost and future maintenance, both companies have developed their own server design and optimized their server room structure. These efforts have not only shaken branded vendors' industrial status, but also created new white-box service model. This report profiles the rise of large data centers and examines its impact on the global server industry, especially branded vendors.
