Abstract

In the first quarter of 2013, shipment volume of the Greater China industry is estimated at around 36.1 million units, declining 16.6% sequentially and 13.7% year-on-year. The first quarter has been traditionally the weak season for notebook PCs and therefore the sequential decline was expected. However, the year-on-year growth also saw an over 10% decline. Other than the better-than-expected shipment performance in the first quarter of 2012, the decline was also ascribed to the lukewarm welcome in the consumer market for Windows 8 models. Meanwhile, value-line and mid-range touch enabled notebook PCs - which used to enjoy better sales - faced the shortage of touch components, thereby leading to a relatively large shipment decline in the first-quarter.
