Abstract

Driven by the brisk sales of iPads, Taiwanese tablet PC shipment volume rose 28.2% sequentially to approximately 22.0 million units in the second quarter of 2012. As panel supply gradually got on track, sales of New iPads have surpassed iPad 2, which also posted sales growth in the US education market due to a price cut to US$399. The second quarter also saw the launch of numerous brands' Android-based tablet PCs. Although these new tablet PCs come with a OGS (One Glass Solution) touchscreen or plastic case for a lower price, along with high-end hardware specifications and operation systems, the price cut of iPad 2 has stunted the shipment growth of the branded vendors' Android tablet PCs. Google's own-branded tablet PC Nexus 7, which boasts a low price and high-level hardware specifications, only managed to ship a small volume in the second quarter, making an insignificant contribution to overall Android tablet PC shipments.
