Abstract

While the global economy is displaying signs of recovery, some regions of the world will experience less growth in 2002 than occurred 2001. Amidst this uncertain economic climate, both corporate and consumer markets have taken a more conservative attitude toward information technology spending, which is apt to last throughout 2002 and into 2003. Although the Taiwanese economy and IT industry was heavily impacted by the global economic downturn in 2001, the Taiwanese IT industry is experiencing an early recovery, in part due to increasing market share of certain products. As for the overall Taiwanese IT industry, most sectors will endure the brunt of global economic decline during the third quarter, rebounding either in the fourth quarter or during 2003. Of all Taiwanese IT industries, integrated circuit manufacturing will see the highest growth, followed by information appliances. The IT software industry will experience a strong recovery by 2003 after a dip in the third quarter of 2003, while the IT hardware industry will maintain steady growth throughout. The computer networking industry will be hit hardest in the second half of 2002 before bouncing back in 2003. In addition to a forecast of the above five major Taiwanese IT industries, this Symposium will provide global economic statistics and analyses. Finally, MIC will present a forecast covering the second half of 2002 and 2003 for key IT products, including motherboards, notebook PCs, digital cameras, CD-RW, large LCD panels, xDSL, WLAN, and mobile phones.
