Abstract

The US District Court in San Jose, California, adjudicated that Samsung infringed six of Apple's mobile device patents on August 24, 2012, and ordered Samsung to pay US$1.05 billion in damages. This is Apple's biggest victory in their lawsuits against Android platform vendors worldwide since 2010. Although this is the first trial and the ruling only takes effect in the US market, the verdict has had significant impact on the ongoing litigations between these two companies in other countries. This report examines the influence of this ruling on Samsung, and the Smartphone industries in Taiwan and the globe.
