Abstract

East Japan was hit by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake on March 11, 2011, followed by the subsequent tsunami. The situation of the quake-hit zone was worsened by the oil refinery fire and the Fukushima nuclear power plant crisis. The series of disastrous events have caused not only extensive damage to human life and property but also considerable impact on Japan's industrial and economic activities. As Japan has been a major supplier of key ICT components, it is expected that the global ICT industry supply chain will be significantly affected. It is also worth observing whether Japan's domestic market will turn conservative towards consumption in the aftermath of the earthquake. The MIC research team has looked into the possible impacts of the east Japan earthquake on the Taiwanese ICT industry.
