Tier-one Vendors' Market Share on the Rise

According to Cindy Gu, Industry Analyst for Display and Optical at MIC, shipment volume of the Taiwanese LCD TV video processing IC industry arrived at around 16.29 million units in the first half of 2013. The industry's growth momentum in the second half of 2013 is expected to be weaker compared to the same period in previous years, as the third-quarter shipments were dampened by consumers' ahead-of-schedule purchases during January and May to take advantage of Chinese government's subsidy policy for energy-saving household appliance, which terminated in the end of May. However, as consumer confidence remains stable in North America and economic conditions in Europe have shown signs of recovery, bright outlook for the traditional peak season in the developed markets in the second half of the year is still anticipated. North America is the largest market for the Taiwanese LCD TV industry in terms of shipment volume share, followed by Western Europe, while China only taking up around 10%. With the upcoming peak season demand in mature markets, the industry's shipment volume is expected to reach around 20.0 million units in the second half of the year, higher than that in the first half. Overall, shipment volume of the Taiwanese LCD TV video processing IC industry is projected to reach around 36.30 million units in 2013, down 3.8% year on year.

MediaTek and MStar retain their position as tier-one vendors in the Taiwanese LCD TV video processing IC industry. MStar has replaced Zoran to be the major TV IC supplier thanks to Japanese LCD TV branded vendors' orders with Taiwanese contract manufacturers. In addition, MStar has also become a main supplier for many Chinese brands. With Chinese brands grabbing a higher shipment share, MStar has secured a higher market share in the market, thereby driving tier-one vendors' aggregated market share upward to 78.7% in the second quarter of 2013 from 72.4% in the fourth quarter of 2012.
