Annual shipments of large-size LCD panels from Taiwan-based players are expected to reach 239 million units in 2012, up 2% sequentially, compared to last year, according to MIC (Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute), a Taiwan-based ICT industry research institute. Due to the reduced shipments of monitors and the threat posed by Chinese TV panel suppliers, growth momentum of the large-size panel shipment will only see a modest growth throughout the year-end, explained Charles Chou, MIC's senior analyst.
Shipment volume of the small- and medium-size LCD display panel reached 743 million units in the first half of 2012, growing 4.6% on year, noted MIC. MIC predicted that the annual shipments of small- and medium-size LCD panel are expected to hit 1.547 billion units in 2012, enjoying a modest on-year growth of 0.6%. Despite strong demand from tablets and telematics applications, the overall Taiwanese panel growth will be subdued on the decreasing mobile phone panel shipments.
In terms of LCD TV market, shipment volume of the Taiwanese LCD TV industry reached 18 million units in the first half of 2012, declining 28% year-on-year, according to MIC. The market was affected by sluggish demand in mature markets such as Europe, the United States and Japan, Charles explained, adding that China has just begun a new subsidy plan for consumers buy new LCD TVs. As a result, the global LCD TV market demand did not live up to expectations in the first half of 2012, thereby leading to a significant shipment decline in the Taiwanese LCD TV industry.
In the second half of 2012, as several TV brand vendors have decided to revise their annual shipment goals downward, the orders outsourced to Taiwanese manufacturers are expected to be affected. Consequently, the full-year shipment volume of the Taiwanese LCD TV industry will top around 43.0 million units in 2012, representing a 9.8% year-on-year decline, according to MIC.
