Outsourcing by International Vendors Lifts Taiwanese Server Industry to New Peak in 2Q 2003
July 24, 2003
- Although the specter of SARS threatened to enshroud the global market during the second quarter of 2003, the US, Europe, Japan, which account for roughly 75% of the worldwide market, were not heavily impacted by the epidemic. Global demand hence did not exhibit a significant decline.

With IBM, HP, Dell, Sun, and NEC continuing to raise outsourcing, Taiwanese server shipment volume reached a new high of 440,000 units, growing 33.3% year on year. Shipment value rose in step with volume as a rise in share of 2-way servers offset falling prices, climbing 29.3% year on year to reach US$380 million.

Provoked by experiences with SARS contingency measures, greater demand for off-site backup and e-Commerce is expected to boost corporate server procurement in the third quarter of 2003. Further benefiting from continued outsourcing by international vendors, Taiwanese sever volume will again likely reach a new high in the third quarter.
