Global Notebook PC Market Expected to Grow 22.1% in 2010, According to MIC
March 29, 2010

According to research of the Taipei-based Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute (MIC) conducted as part of the ITIS project, the global notebook PC market is expected to pick up in 2010. Basic demand for consumer models will still exist, and the number of consumers that are willing to pay relatively high prices for products is expected to increase. Furthermore, consumers that adopted a wait-and-see attitude in 2009 are expected to make purchases in 2010. In the second half of 2010, the traditional peak season is expected to stimulate the market, and an enterprise replacement wave could emerge. On the other hand, the industry will keep a close eye on the supply of several components and labor shortages in China, and whether these factors will impact notebook PC shipments. Worldwide notebook PC market volume is expected to reach 153 million units in 2010, growing about 22.1% compared to 2009.

Looking at the development of the global notebook PC market in 2009, demand was impacted by the subprime mortgage crisis in the United States at the end of 2008 and the ensuing global financial crisis in 2009. This caused consumer confidence to decline. According to MIC Industry Analyst Nicole Huang, "as for the supply-end, at the end of 2008 many manufacturers had a pessimistic outlook for 2009, and manufacturing order volume did not witness evident growth. Some components suffered from shortages, including panel glass substrates, panel driver IC, and ODD pick-up head. Overall, despite several factors that negatively impacted supply and demand, basic market demand still existed, and the peak-season effect in the market remained as well." As a result, worldwide notebook PC market volume reached 125 million units in 2009, growing 3.1% compared to 2008.

"As for regional markets, in the first quarter of 2009 a number of small- and medium-sized distribution chains in Europe went into bankruptcy, affecting shipments. However, demand in Europe and North America still picked up significantly during the traditional peak season. GDP growth in China and other emerging markets was relatively strong, and several national governments rolled out economic stimulus packages, helping emerging markets to achieve evident growth in terms of notebook PC shipments", said Ms. Huang. "By contrast, Japan's notebook PC market was faced with high unemployment rates and a saturated market, as well as the impact of netbook PC products. The combined share of Western Europe and North America in the global notebook PC market volume was still about 60% in 2009", she added.
