Shipment of the Greater Chinese Netbook PC Industry Expected to Decline QoQ in 4Q '09, Says MIC
November 27, 2009

According to research of the Taipei-based Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute (MIC) conducted as part of the ITIS project, shipment volume of the Greater Chinese netbook PC industry in the third quarter of 2009 is estimated at 6.49 million units, up 19.6% sequentially and 65.6% year-on-year. The industry's shipment volume in the full-year 2009 is expected to exceed 22 million units, more than double the volume of 2008. Shipment value of the industry in the full-year 2009 is expected to reach US$4.87 billion, growing 90% compared to 2008.

According to MIC Industry Analyst Ya Wei Ku, "the continued growth of shipment volume in the third quarter of 2009 was due to the back-to-school demand in North America, bundled sale promotions of mobile operators in China, the gradual rebound of the consumer market in Europe, and smooth key component supply."

MIC expects that the industry's shipment volume in the fourth quarter will decline sequentially. Intel's new Atom processor Pineview is expected to hit the market at the end of 2009 and push shipment volume in the first quarter of 2010. Companies will try to accurately assess inventory volume in the fourth quarter, and they will be more cautious in terms of shipments.

Netbook PC price competition in the retail market is very fierce. Currently, end-market prices of mainstream 10" products are even lower than 8.9" products. In order to avoid further ASP (Average Selling Price) declines, netbook PC companies are segmenting products into high-end, mid-range, and value-line. High-end products feature touchscreens and long battery life, while value-line products are often seen in 3C channels and mobile operators' bundled sale promotions.

Compal was still the largest netbook PC contract manufacturer in the third quarter. The company has orders from many key netbook PC vendors and it continues to have the largest shipment volume. Compal was followed by Pegatron, Quanta, Inventec and MSI.
