Taiwanese Makers' Cost-Down Strategies Drive 1Q 2003 Projector Volume Growth
April 24, 2003
- As the global projector market gradually expands, a comprehensive Taiwanese projector supply chain is gradually developing. At the same time, new panels and procurement of Taiwanese-produced optical components have lowered projector costs, enabling brand-name vendors to adopt low priced-strategies to further spur demand. With OEM and ODM orders steadily rolling in, Taiwanese projector shipment volume grew 118% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2003, reaching of 79,130 units.

Due to falling prices Taiwanese projector shipment value was only slightly higher than in the same period in 2002, totaling US$97.1 million. Average selling price has fallen by approximately 40% from US$2,000 in early 2002 to around US$1,200 at present.

Given that the majority of Taiwanese projector maker output results from OEM or ODM business, a drop in outsourcing from brand-name vendors has a profound influence. Despite sharp growth in the first quarter, the impact of war on the global economy, slack seasonal sales, and conservative consumer and corporate spending will dampen second quarter growth. Taiwanese projector shipment volume is forecasted to grow 13.7% from the first quarter of 2003 to reach 68,000 units in the second quarter.
