Shipment Growth of Taiwanese LCD TV Industry Expected to Reach 50% in 2009, According to MIC
November 25, 2008
According to statistics of the ITIS project - a project initiated by Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs and conducted by Taipei-based MIC - shipment volume of the Taiwanese LCD TV industry is expected to reach 19.33 million units in 2008, while shipment volume of the Taiwanese LCD monitor industry is expected to reach 113.07 million units.

Looking at growth trends, shipment volume of the Taiwanese LCD TV industry in 2008 is expected to grow 32% compared to the previous year. Growth in 2008 is being limited by the aggressive efforts of Japanese and Korean TV brands to increase their market share, impacting current clients of Taiwanese manufacturers. The Taiwanese LCD monitor industry is being affected by a weak market and strong performances of competitors, and is expected to see a decline in shipment volume 2008. In 2009, the Taiwanese LCD TV industry's shipment volume is expected to see a growth rate of 50%, while the LCD monitor industry is expected to grow only slightly.

Both the Taiwanese LCD monitor and LCD TV industry feature a high degree of industry concentration. The top five makers in the LCD monitor industry account for about 90% of total shipment, while the top five makers in the LCD TV industry account for more than 70% of total shipment. According to MIC Senior Industry Analyst Charles Chou, "LCD TV will be the key to future growth of Taiwan's display industry. In the industry the major manufacturers are expected to expand their competitive advantages and industry concentration is expected to continue increasing. In 2009, the LCD TV industry is expected to still mainly ship small- to medium-sized products."

MIC expects that after 2009, worldwide LCD monitor growth will be lower than 2%, limiting the growth potential of the Taiwanese LCD monitor industry. Mr. Chou stated that in the past LCD monitors were the foundation of Taiwan's display industry. However, with growth in the LCD monitor sector slowing down, an important factor for the Taiwanese display industry's ability to continue growing in the future will be whether the successful experiences and core competitiveness of the LCD monitor industry can be applied in the LCD TV industry.

Furthermore, worldwide import tariffs will be an important issue for Taiwanese LCD TV makers in 2009. In the long-term future, anticipating import tariff issues at an early stage and devising appropriate worldwide deployment strategies will be very important for Taiwanese makers.

Regarding the short-term outlook of the Taiwanese LCD TV industry, Charles Chou stated that "LCD TV prices are expected to continue to fall, and Korean and Japanese brands will be more aggressive in terms of releasing production orders to Taiwanese manufacturers in the short-term future. Meanwhile, falling panel prices have caused FOB costs to continue descending. In the short-term future, this benefits Taiwanese makers, which have significant production operations in China as well as worldwide logistics capabilities."
