AI is bringing transformative changes to the mobile communication market, and according to a report by MIC, it is having a significant impact on telecom operators (telcos), one of key industry players. MIC identified three key observations about the influence of AI on telcos.
First Observation: 73% of the world’s top 100 telcos have already implemented AI applications, primarily focusing on improving user experiences and enhancing efficiency at the RAN (Radio Access Network) level. Telcos aim to retain customers through new services or enhanced user experiences while also reducing costs by optimizing energy consumption and increasing efficiency at the RAN level. Senior industry analyst Huang Shih-Zong stated that current analytical and predictive AI systems are not yet capable of achieving fully automated operations across mobile networks. Achieving this ultimate goal will require telecom-specific GenAI development based on proprietary telecom data, which is the next development target for telcos. The creation of valuable telecom AI applications depends on robust data strategies that ensure availability, reliability, and compliance with regulatory measures.

Second Observation: Key players in the network communication industry are each developing their own telecom AI solutions, with goals such as increasing network efficiency and meeting customer needs. However, one crucial goal is energy saving and carbon reduction. AI software solutions can effectively reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions at the RAN level, and when combined with next-generation low-energy hardware, the integration of software with green hardware will yield even more significant energy and carbon savings, Huang added. Some major network players are already investing in this area, and the green energy business opportunity will be a key factor in telcos' future partner choices.
Third Observation: The integration of AI-native mobile networks with Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) technology holds the potential to create new communication applications. Huang noted that GenAI’s learning and decoding capabilities could address current challenges in BCI development, enabling the non-invasive reading of brain signals and facilitating commercially viable BCI communication applications, with smart home applications emerging as a promising direction.
