Third-generation semiconductors primarily consist of wide bandgap materials such as silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN). These semiconductors are also referred to as "compound semiconductors" due to the combination of these two materials. In response to global demands for low-carbon transformation and high-speed wireless transmission, third-generation semiconductor products, with their superior material properties, have garnered significant global attention for their potential to enhance energy efficiency and next-generation mobile communications, according to the Taipei-based research institute Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute (MIC).
Taiwan is a global leader in both the wafer foundry and packaging/testing industries, with market shares exceeding 50% in each sector, solidifying its position as a cornerstone of the global semiconductor industry. While wafer foundries such as TSMC and Episil have been manufacturing third-generation semiconductor components for international clients for many years, Taiwan's development of end products in the third-generation semiconductor market began much later until late 2020.

As a result, the current shipment value of Taiwan's third-generation semiconductor industry is primarily derived from foundry services (including epitaxial processes), followed by the substrate sector, according to Peter Chou, senior industry analyst at MIC.
