These semiconductors are also referred to as "compound semiconductors" due to the combination of these two materials. In response to global demands for low-carbon transformation and high-speed wireless transmission, third-generation semiconductor products, with their superior material properties, have garnered significant global attention for their potential to enhance energy efficiency and next-generation mobile communications, according to the Taipei-based research institute Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute (MIC).
Taiwan is a global leader in both the wafer foundry and packaging/testing industries, with market shares exceeding 50% in each sector, solidifying its position as a cornerstone of the global semiconductor industry. While wafer foundries such as TSMC and Episil have been manufacturing third-generation semiconductor components for international clients for many years, Taiwan's development of end products in the third-generation semiconductor market began much later until late 2020.
