The US-China trade war, supply chain disruptions caused by COVID-19 and geopolitics, and the rise of emerging technologies have played key roles in affecting the global ICT industry since 2020. With ongoing trade conflict and pandemic, the global IT industry has developed towards regional production. This has somewhat put Taiwan at a great advantage as Taiwan has comprises of solid and resilient upstream and downstream industrial supply chain clusters with adequate IT hardware and R&D talents to tap the needs of the global semiconductor, IT hardware, network communications, and smartphone industry. As a result, Taiwan’s IT hardware industry production value is estimated to have reached US$152.9 billion in 2021, up 15.4% year-on-year.

Shipment value of the Taiwanese semiconductor industry reached US$35.5 billion in the third quarter of 2021, up 10.3% sequentially and 33.0% year on year. The IC design, semiconductor manufacturing, and OSAT, the three major subsectors of the Taiwanese semiconductor industry, have enjoyed significant growth in orders and revenues in the third quarter as chip demand have continued to soar. IC design companies and memory suppliers have registered outstanding revenue growth thanks to excessive demand in the end market that have forced them to raise IC prices. Hence, production value of the Taiwanese semiconductor industry is estimated to have reached US$130.0 billion in 2021, up 31.8% year-on-year.
