Global 5G CPE Shipment Volume to Reach 5.6 Million Units in 2021: MIC
December 24, 2020

Shipment Volume of the Global 5G CPE (Customer Premises Equipment) industry is estimated to reach 5.6 million units in 2021, up 58.9% compared to 2020, according to MIC (Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute), a government think tank and a leading research institute in Taiwan.

Shipment value of Taiwan's 5G CPE is estimated at US$215 million in 2020 and grow to US$546 million in 2021. “In the first half of 2020, COVID-19 outbreak affected 5G commercial network construction, leading to the slowdown in shipments. However, Taiwan’s CPE shipment volume reached 244,000 units in the third quarter of 2020, up 41% sequentially and 458% year-on-year,” said Edward Lin, Deputy Director at MIC.

"In addition to traditional cable, DSL, and FTTx, home networking now has another option called FWA (Fixed Wireless Access) standard, which is best suited for regions where network construction is challenging or construction cost is relatively high,” Lin added. “While some telecom operators in other countries have used 5G FWA as a replacement to wireline connections in the last mile and replace DSL technology, some Mi-Fi (Mobile Wi-Fi) CPE users are upgrading their equipment to 5G.”
