Online Payments by Mobile Phones and PCs are Now Equally Popular in Taiwan: MIC
April 29, 2020

Taiwan’s MIC (Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute), a government think tank and IT research institute, recently released the findings of Taiwanese netizen online behavior survey conducted in the fourth quarter of 2019. The findings suggest online payments through mobile phones grew significantly from 35.9% in 2018 to 49.6% in 2019, nearly outpacing that through PCs (desktop PCs, notebook PCs, and tablets). The proportions of Taiwan’s netizens accessing the internet through mobile phones also grew from 43.8% in 2018 to 55.9% in 2019, surpassing that through PCs for the first time. “Although e-commerce has been around for years, most of Taiwanese netizens still made online purchases by PCs. However, it is anticipated online payments by mobile phones will eventually become the mainstream in Taiwan,” says Rosa Chang, senior industry analyst with MIC.

Meanwhile, Line Pay (21.8%) jumped to the third place, overtaking cash on delivery services (15.5%), in 2019.”
