July 18, 2019

RF front-end modules are indispensable in wireless communications systems and the quality of the modules has a direct impact on the quality of data communications. The market is currently dominated by Broadcom, Skyworks, and Qorvo, also known as the “Big 3.” “For the Big 3, the 5G smartphone, national defense, and Wi-Fi 6 markets will be extremely important in their future plans,” said Jing-kai Huang, industry analyst at (Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute), a Taipei-based and government-backed research institute. “Global 5G smartphone shipment volume is forecast to reach 100 million units in 2020, up from just 7.3 million in 2019,” said Eddie Han, senior industry analyst at MIC.

“While 5G phones are expected to be the top priority market for Skyworks as Qualcomm and MediaTek recently said that they will adopt Skywork’s products in their 5G phones. National defense is the most important market for Qorvo as it is the only “Big 3” vendor with GaN technology and only supplier recognized by the US military,” Huang added. “Broadcom and Skyworks Collaborate on RF front-end modules for Wi-Fi 6 chips and Qorvo is chasing closely behind.”
