Global 5G smartphone shipment volume is estimated to reach 4.2 million units in 2019, according to Taipei-based, government-backed MIC (Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute) at a press conference held on August 28, 2018. "Since most of global operators are set to launch their commercial 5G networks sometime in 2020, 5G smartphone shipments will likely to grow considerably from 2021 onwards," says Chien-Hsun Lee, Research Director at MIC.

"Thus far, some Android smartphone brands and their chipmakers have announced that they will jointly launch their first 5G gadgets in 2019. In China, China Mobile is set to purchase 5G smartphone at the beginning of 2019. Given the higher level of technology maturity and the full-scale of 5G network deployments, global 5G smartphone shipment volume is forecast to hit over 310 million units in 2022."
