Despite the steady decline in sales over the years, the IT industry will still manage to maintain its share in 2018, according to Taipei-based, government-backed IT research institute MIC (Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute). MIC's ICT Industry Yearbook 2017 entails the shipment performance, value chain, future outlook and highlights of the global notebook PC, motherboard, server, smartphone, and smart wearable industry. MIC's analysts specializing in these industry sectors have some brief comments on their future developments in 2018 and beyond as follows.

"Due to an increase in Chinese production and Japanese customers’ withdrawal from the market, concentration in the notebook PC market will continue to rise with second-tier branded vendors moving towards niche products," says Jessica Hsu, senior industry analyst with MIC.

"Adaptability has become the most important requirement in the server market as large service providers expand their business to other segments." Cliff Kung, industry analyst with MIC. "While US brands are adjusting their business models, Chinese brands are catching up very fast. Beijing intends to promote a homegrown computing industry chain. As a result, local brands including Huawei, Inspur, Sugon, and Lenovo that have collectively taken up 70% of the Chinese market."

"The future development of the motherboard industry will depend on the commercial market," says Claire Lin, industry analyst with MIC. "The continued erosion of the desktop PC market by notebook PCs and smart mobile devices is likely to drive down motherboard demand further in the consumer market."

"In terms of market share, Samsung and Apple are still the top 2 smartphone OBMs (Own Branding Manufacturers), followed by Huawei, says Eddie Han, senior industry analyst with MIC."Capitalizing on extensive physical channels and abundant marketing resources, Oppo and Vivo come in fourth and fifth, leaving LG, Lenovo, Xiaomi, and other brands behind. However, faced with a saturated market, rising wages, and policy changes, even Chinese smartphone OEMs have begun to shift production from China to emerging economies such as India."

"With 41.8 million units sold and an annual growth rate of 67% in 2016, smartwatch has become the main growth driver for writ wearable by achieving an annual growth rate of 50% and sales volume of 62.7 million units in 2017," says Ian Wang, industry analyst with MIC. "The strong growth was mainly attributed to the ICT and watch companies' devotion in smartwatch development."
