Worldwide Wafer Foundry Industry Growing at a Steady Pace Due to Continued Tight Supply in 2018: MIC
April 03, 2018

The global wafer foundry industry's shipment value (both pure-play and IDMs) reached USD 58.8 million in 2017, up 11.5% up 6.3% year-on-year, and is expected to grow further as the supply to remain tight throughout 2018, according to Taipei-based and government-backed IT research institute MIC (Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute) "The growth in 2017 is mainly attributed to the rollout of a number of flagships by leading smartphones brands over the year," says Joen Yang, senior industry analyst with MIC.

"On top of that, the adoption of fingerprint ID (Identification) ICs, LCD driver ICs, GPS (Global Positioning Service) ICs, and RFICs (Radio Frequency ICs) in emerging applications such as automotive electronics, IoT (Internet of Things), and 5G is also on the rise, thereby leading to a continued tight supply in the global wafer foundry industry this year."
