The rapid growth of smartphones around the world has ensured the future of DRAM in mobile devices, according to Taipei-based IT research institute MIC (Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute). Worldwide smartphone shipments hit 1.43 billion units for the full year of 2015 and are expected to have reached 1.5 billion units in 2016. Therefore, in the second half of 2016, 39.6% of the global DRAM products were used in smartphones, compared to 34.6% in the first half of 2015.

In 2016, worldwide demand for smartphones, PCs and other consumer electronics has failed to pick up again despite the growing DRAM usage in these devices. In spite of the new opportunities contributed by automotive, medical and IoT applications, growth momentum in these sectors has remained limited as they are still in the early stage of development.
