This research used data mining techniques to analyze 933 patents related to augmented reality head-mounted display devices and applied to USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) during January 1, 1996 and January 15, 2016. Most of the assignees' patents concentrated in the following sectors: Electronic Engineering (50.2%), Apparatus (15.3%), Mechanical Engineering (1.7%), Chemistry (1.3%), and others (1.0%), according to MIC (Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute), a Taipei-based IT research institute.

"By field, the majority of the patents were related to Optics (38.3%), followed by Audio-visual technology (23.2%), Computer technology (15.7%), Telecommunications (9.8%), Measurement (3.2%), Control (2.9%), and Medical technology (1.4%)," says David Chen, senior analyst with MIC.
