Despite slowing market demand, shipment volume of the global smartphone industry is estimated to top approximately 1.5 billion units in 2016, up 4.2% year-on-year, according to MIC (Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute), a Taipei-based IT research institute. "It is observed the smartphone industry had a relatively soft start with shipment volume reaching merely 342.7 million units in the first quarter, down 14.9% sequentially and 0.1% year-on-year. This was due largely in part to softer market demand," says Edward Lin, Deputy Director and senior industry analyst with MIC.

"When it comes to individual brands' shipment performance at the beginning of 2016, we found companies like Huawei and some second-tier companies such as Oppo and Vivo performed relatively well compared to other established players like Apple and Xiaomi. Huawei, for instance, had shipped 27.6 million smartphones in the first quarter of 2016 alone, representing a whopping 51.6% year-on-year growth, owing to strong sales of large-sized Mate 8."
