Shipment volume of the global motherboard industry reached 32.3 million and 29.15 million units in the fourth quarter of 2015 and the first quarter of 2016, respectively, according to MIC (Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute), a Taipei-based IT research institute. "The industry has suffered from two consecutive sequential declines since the fourth quarter of 2015. The year-on-year decline in the fourth quarter was due largely in part to the delayed launch of Intel Skylake CPUs and a higher baseline in the fourth quarter of 2014 where the last commercial replacement took place," says Chris Wei, senior analyst with MIC. "The uncertainty in global economic prospects for PCs, coupled with the relatively soft demand for motherboards during Chinese Lunar New year, affected motherboard shipments in the first quarter of 2016."
