Global PC System Shipment Decline to Soften in 2016: MIC
September 16, 2015

Of the total global IT systems, desktop PC and server will be the only two sectors to witness year-on-year shipment growth in 2016, according to MIC (Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute), a government-backed ICT research institute in Taiwan. "Despite so, notebook PC and tablet shipment declines will slow down, owing to Intel's new CPU rollout and vendors' aggressive move to pave into gaming and educational markets," says Charles Chou, Deputy Director of MIC's IT & Electronics Industry Research Center, at MIC's annual forum held in Taipei from September 11 to 24. "Therefore, we reckon the significant decline facing the global PC market in 2015 will be able to alleviate in 2016."

In 2016, MIC estimates global notebook PC shipment volume will top 155 million units, down 3.9% year-on-year while global desktop PC shipment volume will increase 1.3% year-on-year, to 121 million units.

Tablets Facing First Year-on-year Decline in 2015

MIC estimates tablets will face 12% year-on-year decline in 2015, the first time since its debut. Furthermore, global tablet shipment volume will decline further to around 191 million units in 2016, representing 10.3% year-on-year decline.

"Over the years, vendors have worked hard to push sales of large-sized 2-in-1 tablets in the commercial market, but it hasn't turned out as expected due to relatively high prices," says Charles. "Despite their seemingly insignificant contribution on the tablet market growth, 2-in-1 tablets are expected to score 79% year-on-year shipment growth in 2016, to 24.78 million units, as more vendors will rush into this area."

Shipment Share of Taiwan's ODM Direct Server to Exceed Branded Servers in 2016

Looking ahead to the global server shipments in 2016, MIC estimates Taiwanese servers' global share will reach around 35% and Taiwanese server shipment volume will top around 10.74 million units, up 6.8% compared to 2015.

The global share of ODM direct servers will likely to reach about 23% and outpace branded servers in 2016. "The rise of big data centers and the increasing number of native suppliers and/or EMS in emerging markets are going to affect the future development of ODMs", says Charles.

Growing Influence of White-box Products on Taiwan's ODM's Total Available Market

MIC also observes some subtle changes in Taiwanese ODM's TAM (Total Available Market). The global share of notebook PCs made by Taiwanese ODMs is expected to remain 100%, while the global share of tablets is likely to dip 2 percentage points to around 73% in 2016.

"Looking ahead to the future, as the pace of innovation in IT systems will become slower, more PC brands are now looking to IoT-related applications for new opportunities," says Charles. "Therefore, how well can Taiwan's ODMs utilize the unused capacity and optimize their manufacturing flexibility and system integration capabilities will be key differentiators to sustain their future growth."
